About Zaragoza

It is the capital of Spain's autonomous Aragon region. It is located in the north-east of the country, right in the middle of Madrid and Barcelona. Under the Umayyad rule, the city was called 'Sarakuşta'; at that time it was the strongest city in the region. When the Emevis left the Iberian Peninsula, Zaragoza was taken the dominion of the Aragonese kingdom.

The Cathedral of Basilica del Pilar, which brings Zaragoza to the center and the symbol city of all Christianity in Spain, is the city's most visited structure. It was originally built as a chapel, and it is narrated that the Virgin Mary was seen on the columns of this chapel in the first century. It took its current shape at the end of the 17th century.

Every year on October 12, with the participation of large crowds from all over the country and the world, 'Pilar Day' is celebrated in the city. This holy day is also perceived by the participants as a 'pilgrimage visit'. La Seo Cathedral, Aljaferia Palace and the Zaragoza Museum are other tourist attractions in the city. Zaragoza is under steppe climate effect. It does not receive high amounts of rainfall throughout the year. Zaragoza Airport is 16 kilometers west of the city.
