About Cluj Napoca

Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania province. Located in the Somesul Mic River valley, the city is one of Romania’s most important tourist destinations. After Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca is Romania’s second largest city. With its architecture, landscaping, and ambience, Cluj-Napoca is a well-preserved historic city. Known as Koloşvar during the Ottoman era, Cluj-Napoca is located in the northwest of the country. The city’s establishment dates back to the Roman Empire; it gained ‘city’ status in the 2nd century AD. The city got its name in the 12th century from Castrum Clus, meaning ‘closed place’ in Latin.

Cluj-Napoca is the most important city in the country in terms of cultural, scientific, commercial, and industrial activities. Investments in technology over the recent years have been concentrated in this city. Therefore, Cluj-Napoca is known as Romania’s technopolis. The city is home to the Babes-Bolyai University so it has a large population of students. A lot of important academic research is done in the city.

İbrahim Müteferrika, who established the first printing press in the Ottoman Empire was born in Cluj-Napoca. Since the city was within the Austro-Hungarian Empire borders for many years there is a very large Hungarian population. The city’s biggest architectural icon is the St. Michael’s Church located in the city’s main square, Union Square. Among the city’s main tourist sights to see are the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, Matthias Corvinus House, the Banffy Castle, National Theatre, Botanical Garden, Central Park, the Pharmacy Museum, Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, and Romulus Vuia ethnographical park. The city has a cold and temperate climate with significant rainfall in the summer and winter months. The Cluj International Airport is located 9 km east of the city. 

Transportation to Cluj Napoca City Center from Airport

You can go to the city center from the airport by taxi or by renting a car. If you want to reduce your transportation costs, you can opt for public transportation. Two hotels in Cluj offer airport shuttle service for their customers. If the hotel you will stay at is close to these, you can benefit from these shuttles by getting in contact and paying the fare in advance.

Car Rental

There are 10 different car rental companies serving at the airport. The daily rental price of a car with standard features is about 17 Euro. To get to the city center with the car you have rented, you must drive westward on the highway 1C and connect to the road E576. Under normal traffic conditions, you can reach the city center in less than 15 minutes.

Taxi

You can see the taxi stand right at the exit of the arriving passenger terminal. Taxi fare is 0.50 Euro per km. Getting to the city center from the airport by taxi costs about 5-10 Euro on average. By taxi you can get to the city center in about 10 minutes.

Bus

You can reach the city center in half an hour by the bus route 5 departing from the airport. The buses operate every 10 minutes from 05:10 am to 10:38 pm on weekdays; on Saturdays from 05:48 am to 08:57 pm and on Sundays from 06:22 am to 08:57 pm every 20 minutes.

Hotel Shuttle

Premier Hotel and Granata Hotel have shuttle buses that carry passengers from the airport to the city center. You should not forget to make a reservation in advance in order to benefit from this service.
