About Cardiff

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales and is the country’s largest and the United Kingdom’s 10th largest city. Cardiff received ‘city’ status from King Edward VII in 1905. It was declared the country’s capital in 1955. The city’s establishment dates back 6 thousand years to the Roman era. The city is the cultural, art, tourism, political and sports hub of Wales. The country’s largest river, River Taff, passes through the city. Until 1905 Cardiff was a small coastal town that got by on fishing. Thanks to the coal mines and port in the south, the city has become the most developed city, in terms of trade and industry, in Wales.

Since the 1990’s the city has continued to grow. During this development the city’s lush green natural texture and historic riches did not incur the slightest damage. Cardiff is one of the cities in the UK that has the cleanest air. Rugby, football, and cricket are very popular in the city. The city’s two iconic structures, Millennium Stadium and Wales Millennium Centre, are the most stunning examples of modern architecture in the city. The city’s most attractive sights include the Cardiff Castle, Llandaff Cathedral, St. Fagan's National History Museum, National Museum, City Hall, and Red Castle.

The city has an active role in the entertainment world and is home to the studio where the famous television series Doctor Who is filmed. The ‘Doctor Who Experience’ area, which fans of the show flock to, offers those who want the opportunity to experience some of the action scenes in the TV series. In addition, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones were both born in Cardiff. The city has a mild and warm climate with heavy rainfall. The Cardiff Airport is located 12 km from the city center. The city is located in close proximity to London; London Heathrow Airport is a 1.5-hour drive to the city center.
