About Athens

With over 3000 years of history, Athens is not only the largest city and capital of Greece, it was also the cultural and economic capital of the ancient Greek civilization, one of the building blocks of modern European culture. Named after the goddess of war and wisdom, there are many ancient Greek temples still standing in Athens today. The most famous of these is the Acropolis, situated on a high hill in the center of the city. You can also visit temples to Nike (the Greek god of victory), Zeus, the Archeology Museum, the Plaka district, and the Sintagma Monastary when in Athens.

The city has a population of 4 million. Athens' nightlife and entertainment scene is especially colorful. Visiting a Greek taverna, you can drink, eat, and listen to music until the sun rises. You should also sample Greek cuisine, especially the plentiful olive oil dishes and the gyro wrap.

The world's first Olympics, both in ancient history and the modern era, were held here. The city enjoys a Mediterrean climate with warm and dry summers and rainy winters. You can still visit the city year-round and not experience too much trouble with regards to the weather. The city is served by Elefherios Venizelos, which is directly connected to the city by metro and bus. While in the city you can use the metro, bus, taxi, or tramway to get around.
